As we know, ambassadors are sent out from their homeland by the leader of the country (king, president, etc.) to be a presence of the homeland in a foreign land. To me that position is the best picture of the scripture “be in the world but not of it” that you can find. Mainly because the ambassador lives, works, and plays in a land that he truly does not belong to. In fact, he is to live his life on the grounds that have been assigned to him in the same manner as if he were in his homeland. He is obedient to the laws of the assigned land until they come in conflict with the laws of his homeland. At that point he no longer submits to the foreign government but rather relies upon the citizenship of his homeland to insulate him from the effects of the foreign laws.
It is sometimes easy for us to forget that this earth is not our home. We get caught up in the daily grind; we work and interact in such a way that makes onlookers think we belong here. But in truth, we have been put on earth to be a presence of heaven. Living among the events of the earth but made of a different spirit, having a different mission than many around us.
I am trying not to get too attached to the things of this life. To hold the treasures God puts in my hand loosely, knowing they really belong to HIM. Keeping my eyes fixed on HIS beautiful face. Have you ever wondered by the songwriter phrased it “look FULL in HIS wonderful face”? If you look fully into someone’s face there is little to no room for peripheral vision. HE is too beautiful to describe with words. Truly, only the heart has words to adore HIM. HIS beauty is so captivating that the world REALLY does grow strangely dim as we look upon HIM.
What an honor to be chosen to be HIS ambassador. Showing all how Kingdom life is lived. Showing how HIS government works. All the while longing for the day when we finish the assignment and return to the place we belong.
