Distant Vision...

I am one of those unfortunate people who need eyewear in order to see.  Thanks to cataracts being removed I can at least make my way around my home without putting my glasses on.  But I would like to share with you what God taught me about vision.

As I indicated, I have worn glasses most of my life.  My family was not blessed with good eyesight.  So I had been praying fervently for God to give me 20/20 vision.  One day I noticed I could see some print on a page without my glasses.  My heart began to jump.  I just knew that God had heard my cry.  Each day I was enjoying seeing more things without my glasses.  The day I completed my all my work without putting my glasses on was a grand day indeed.

My friend’s husband is my eye doctor.  So I called her and told her I needed an appointment.  I needed confirmation that my eyesight was being healed.  She was excited as I and made the appointment.  She mentioned to her husband that I was coming for a checkup and told him I thought my sight was improving.  He was quiet so she asked him what he was thinking.  He explained that he did not think it was an improvement in sight.  He went on that at my age he had a good idea what was going on.

I arrived at my appointment and had the exam.  It was just as he had thought.  It was not improved vision but rather onset of cataracts.  He explained how at times near vision temporarily improved because of the cataracts.  He told me the old timers called it “second sight”.  I was so disappointed.  I did not want to believe what he was saying.  He is an excellent doctor and I had no reason to question him.  But my heart wanted him to say my eyes were better.

He asked me to do an exercise.  He told me when I backed out of my drive the next morning to pay close attention to how far away I could see clearly.  He went on that I had backed out of that drive for years and knew how far previously  I could see clearly.

The next morning I backed out looking down my drive, into the street, and across the street to that house. Oh, my goodness, he was right!!!  In my excitement to be able to get out of the house and into the car without my glasses I did not notice I could not see the house across the street as clearly as when I had my glasses on.  It was only things that were close up that appeared clearer.

As I pondered on that I learned something from Jesus.  Jesus told me I had just walked through another parable.  HE explained that often I focus so much on things that are near (things of this life) that I lose the far reaching picture.  I let the now often blur the eternal.  I get my focus on living and forget eternal life.  Jesus shared that HE would prefer that I see those distant things, eternity with HIM, righteous life, centered on HIS worship, living Kingdom principles, etc, clearly.  That if I needed aid in seeing anything HE would prefer it be those things pertaining to this life.

I marvel that removal of cataracts does not “correct” vision.  It simply lets more light in.  So I have asked Jesus to perform “spiritual cataract “ surgery on me.  I want all THE LIGHT to come into me so that I focus on the long run.  Yes I want to see things in this life clearly and not have any deception in my life.  But most of all I want to see eternal things with laser precision accuracy.

By the way still praying for 20/20 eye sight.  Still believe it will be granted.

Hope to see you in the Tea Room soon.
